Panasonic has unveiled two new hybrid full-frame mirrorless cameras, the LUMIX S5II and S5IIX, at the Consumer Electronics Show 2023. These highly anticipated cameras are the first LUMIX mirrorless models to feature Phase Detection Auto-Focus (PDAF), a significant upgrade over previous models, thanks to a new 24.2-megapixel 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor and a new imaging engine.
Developed under the L² Technology alliance formed by LEICA and LUMIX, the new imaging engine delivers high resolution, natural description, and approximately 2x higher-speed signal processing for high bit-rate video recording. To make the PDAF capabilities more reliable, Panasonic has increased the AF points to 779, significantly improving subject tracking.
Features
The LUMIX S5II and S5IIX also boast a powerful image stabilization system, combining Body I.S. (5-axis) and O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer, 2-axis) to create the 5-axis Dual I.S. 2, allowing 6.5-stop slower shutter speed. The cameras also feature Active I.S., providing even more stable video recording by optimizing horizontal, vertical, and rotational correction ratios.
These new cameras provide high video performance comparable to the LUMIX S1H, with 4:2:0 10-bit 6K (3:2) / 5.9K (16:9) and unlimited 4:2:2 10-bit C4K/4K recording capability. A new heat-dispersion mechanism eliminates the need for recording time limits to avoid overheating. Additionally, the cameras offer HFR (High Frame Rate) in C4K/4K (48p) and FHD (120p) as well as Slow & Quick motion in C4K/4K(1-60fps) / FHD(1-180fps).
Video Deatils
The LUMIX S5II and S5IIX also support 14+ stop V-Log/V-Gamut capture for a high dynamic range and broad colors, along with a REAL TIME LUT function for color grading on compatible videos and photos in-camera. This feature is particularly useful for livestreaming and sharing images on social media without post-production.
Priced at $1,999.99, the LUMIX S5II will be available in January 2023, while the LUMIX S5IIX will retail for $2,199.99 and will be available in May 2023.
In addition to the PDAF capabilities and impressive image stabilization, the LUMIX S5II and S5IIX offer several other notable features, including:
- Professional-quality photo/video performance: Dual Native ISO sensitivity, high-speed burst shooting, and a wealth of video functions and recording options.
- Excellent operability: A variety of options have been added to improve the shooting experience, such as AWB Lock, Sheer Overlay, Luminance level extension, and practical manual focusing options.
- Reliable quality and performance: A new heat dispersion mechanism, magnesium alloy full die-cast front/rear frame, and splash-resistant and dust-resistant design ensure durability in the field.
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi 5 GHz (IEEE802.11ac) and 2.4 GHz (IEEE802.11b/g/n)
